Ross supports many charities and is currently Co-patron of Against Breast Cancer; working with The Food Standards Agency on their Food in Focus campaign; Honorary Ambassador of the Galapagos Conservation Trust; and supporter of the WWF and Countryside Alliance. Against Breast Cancer www.aabc.org.uk Although Ross admits that the actress Sheila Hancock pressed him in to supporting this charity, he has become very interested in its cause and has enormous admiration for the doctor who head the research team, Dr Anthony Leathem. The charity funds research into the causes of breast cancer and their emphasis is on the whole woman; her tumour, her response to the tumour and her environment. The research team are striving to prevent the secondary spread of the disease and studies human tissue rather than using animals.Food in Focus www.foodstandards.gov.uk/healthiereating/bus Galapagos Conservation Trust www.gct.org The Galapagos is unique on the earth as a largely self-contained, ecological region with a high level of endemic species in the world. There is nowhere else on the planet where human intervention has been so limited. This allows for the Trust to study the evolutionary processes that create the world around us. The Galapagos also has the second largest Marine Reserve in the world – around one hundred and thirty three thousand square kilometres. One of the objectives of the Trust is to provide funds and support for the conservation work in the Galapagos Islands. Unfortunately a number of flora and fauna are in danger of becoming extinct if current and future conservation efforts fail.

Ross was the face of ORCA – the oceans recovery campaign run by the WWF. Fishing and the way we manage our oceans and their resources is something close to Ross’ heart, having grown up with a grandfather who ran his own fishing fleet. The campaign looks at ways we can halt the decline of the UK’s fisheries and so ensure that species of fish, such as cod, that we take so much for granted, don’t disappear forever. This involves educating the British population in the wonderful array of fish our shores have to offer rather than insisting on eating only two or three types. Ross created recipes exclusively for ORCA such as Herring with Beetroot Gnocchi and Saithe in Parma Ham with Broad Beans.
