ORCA Logo Ross was the face of ORCA – the oceans recovery campaign run by the WWF. Fishing and the way we manage our oceans and their resources is something close to Ross’ heart, having grown up with a grandfather who ran his own fishing fleet. The campaign looks at ways we can halt the decline of the UK’s fisheries and so ensure that species of fish, such as cod, that we take so much for granted, don’t disappear forever. This involves educating the British population in the wonderful array of fish our shores have to offer rather than insisting on eating only two or three types. Ross created recipes exclusively for ORCA such as Herring with Beetroot Gnocchi and Saithe in Parma Ham with Broad Beans.

Against Breat Cancer Logo Although Ross admits that the actress Sheila Hancock pressed him in to supporting this charity, he has become very interested in its cause and has enormous admiration for the doctor who head the research team, Dr Anthony Leathem. The charity funds research into the causes of breast cancer and their emphasis is on the whole woman; her tumour, her response to the tumour and her environment. The research team are striving to prevent the secondary spread of the disease and studies human tissue rather than using animals.

Food in Focus

Cooking Bus Logo The idea of this campaign is to instill an interest in children in what they are eating, to be aware of where their food comes from and to promote healthy eating. Ross is dismayed that food and nutrition is not taught as widely in schools as it once was and that statistics show that children are eating more processed food than ever. This campaign provides mobile kitchens - in the form of Cookery Buses - that travel to schools all over the country providing hands-on workshops where children are able to produce dishes they can either eat there or take home. Priority is given to schools in low-income areas to enable and encourage disadvantaged and vulnerable people to improve their diets. There are two such buses at the moment with the campaign striving to provide a third in the next few years.

Galapagos Conservation Trust www.gct.org
Galapagos Conservation Trust Logo The Galapagos is unique on the earth as a largely self-contained, ecological region with a high level of endemic species in the world. There is nowhere else on the planet where human intervention has been so limited. This allows for the Trust to study the evolutionary processes that create the world around us. The Galapagos also has the second largest Marine Reserve in the world – around one hundred and thirty three thousand square kilometres. One of the objectives of the Trust is to provide funds and support for the conservation work in the Galapagos Islands. Unfortunately a number of flora and fauna are in danger of becoming extinct if current and future conservation efforts fail.
