Emergency medication Print E-mail
If you are allergic to food and have life threatening symptoms, it is wise to carry rescue medication with you. And don’t be afraid to use it!

Adrenalin autoinjector

What is it good for?
Adrenalin counteracts the severe symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as low blood pressure, shortness of breath and swelling of the throat and tongue.

Why do I have to use it?
When you by accident ingest the food you are allergic to, symptoms can develop really quickly and if they are severe, you need help immediately.
So, you only need it when you have severe symptoms it can literally save your life!

How do you use it?
It is available for self treatment (Epipen, Anapen) as an autoinjector: you put the injector after removing the safety cap on your thigh and after that, the adrenaline is automatically injected in your muscle.

Sound awful…….
Yep, injecting yourself is not the funniest job in the world. It is even more difficult when your child has a reaction and you have to inject your child but if you or your child have severe allergy symptoms, you have to inject it!

And after the injection?
Should your allergy symptoms be so severe that you needed to inject yourself, you always should call the doctor or go to the emergency room!!
And if you happen to have them at home, you can take an antihistaminic.

Antihistaminics

Antihistaminics are also used to treat allergic reactions. Most of the times people use them for hay fever symptoms but they are also very effective in treating the minor complaints of an allergic reaction to food such as itching in the mouth and urticaria. So when you feel your mouth itching because of something you ate, you can use antihistaminics. When you have more severe symptoms (see also the page about symptoms) such as astma, tightness of the throat or low blood pressure, use your adrenalin autoinjector!!
